Quick answer

Start with free sample questions on IELTS.org, then use British Council practice tests or IELTS Ready for structured online work. Cambridge IELTS books are paid, official practice products; buy or borrow a legitimate copy and use the included audio or digital access. Free official PDFs exist for sample tasks and answer sheets, but paid Cambridge books are not legal free downloads.

Start with the task you need to understand

A large folder does not make a preparation plan. First confirm whether you need Academic or General Training, record the required overall and section bands, and take official sample material to identify the largest gap.

Choose the next resource by job. Use a sample task to learn instructions, a skills resource to repair a weakness, and a full practice test to check timing and stamina. Repeating full tests without reviewing errors consumes good material without changing the cause of the score.

  • Format question: use an official sample task
  • Skill gap: use targeted lessons and short practice
  • Timing problem: use a timed section
  • Readiness check: use a full official mock
  • Writing or Speaking gap: add criteria-based feedback

IELTS.org: free sample questions and official PDFs

IELTS.org provides free Academic and General Training sample questions. The collection includes paper tasks, computer practice, answer sheets, audio or transcripts where relevant, sample Writing responses and Speaking sample tasks.

These downloads are the safest answer to searches for an IELTS preparation PDF. They show official instructions and task types. Use the correct module: Listening and Speaking are shared, but Academic and General Training Reading and Writing are different.

  • Academic and General Training sample questions
  • Listening audio, transcripts and answer sheets
  • Reading and Writing task PDFs
  • Speaking sample-task PDF
  • Computer-test practice experience

British Council: free practice tests and IELTS Ready

The British Council provides free online practice for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Its computer familiarisation material is useful when the screen, navigation or typing workflow is new to you.

IELTS Ready groups mock tests, guided modules, webinars and other preparation material in one account. The free offer and the Premium package are not the same: the British Council states that Premium is unlocked when you book an eligible IELTS test with it. Check the access terms shown in your country and account.

  • Use skill-specific tests for targeted practice
  • Use the computer familiarisation test before test day
  • Create an IELTS Ready account for the currently available free material
  • Check booking and regional eligibility before expecting Premium access

Cambridge IELTS books: what you are paying for

Cambridge publishes official IELTS preparation books and authentic practice-test collections. The numbered Cambridge IELTS series is designed for full-test practice; editions with answers can include Listening audio, answer keys, sample Writing responses and Speaking video material through the product's stated print or digital package.

A skills guide and a test collection do different jobs. The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS develops skills and strategy across Academic and General Training, while a numbered practice-test book is better reserved for timed checkpoints. Check the edition, module and included access before buying.

  • Academic or General Training edition
  • Book with answers for self-study
  • Audio and digital access included with the product
  • Unused full tests reserved for timed checkpoints
  • Purchase, library loan or another authorised source

Which IELTS PDFs are free and legal?

Official sample tasks, answer sheets and public band descriptors can be downloaded free from IELTS.org and its test partners. A commercial Cambridge book does not become free because a third-party website labels the file as a PDF.

Avoid copied books, answer keys and audio archives. Besides the copyright problem, unofficial bundles are often incomplete, mismatched or altered. Use the publisher's shop, a legitimate bookseller, a library or the access code supplied with the product.

Build a small resource stack you will actually review

Use one official format source, one main skills resource and a limited set of full tests. Keep an error log that records the task type, the reason for the error and the next drill. For Writing and Speaking, attach the relevant public band descriptors to your review.

A practical sequence is simple: complete an official diagnostic, spend several weeks on targeted skills, run a timed checkpoint, then return to the error log. Add another book only when the current material no longer covers the task you need.

  • Diagnostic: IELTS.org sample material
  • Targeted work: British Council or Cambridge skills resources
  • Checkpoint: an untouched official full test
  • Feedback: public Writing or Speaking criteria
  • Review: error log followed by a second attempt

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find free official IELTS practice tests?

IELTS.org provides free Academic and General Training sample questions. The British Council also provides free online practice tests and IELTS Ready resources.

Can I download Cambridge IELTS books as free PDFs?

Paid Cambridge IELTS books are copyrighted commercial products. Use the Cambridge shop, a legitimate bookseller, a library or authorised digital access rather than an unauthorised PDF copy.

Which Cambridge IELTS book should I use?

Choose the correct Academic or General Training edition and a version with answers if you study alone. Use a skills guide for instruction and numbered practice-test books for timed checkpoints.

Are IELTS Speaking PDFs useful?

Yes, when they come from an official source and you use them as prompts. Speaking improvement still requires recorded answers, review against the scoring criteria and another attempt.

Do I need several IELTS preparation books?

Usually not. One official format source, one main skills resource and a limited set of full practice tests are enough when every mistake is reviewed properly.
