Official IELTS Preparation Resources: Free Tests, Books, and PDFs

A large folder does not make a preparation plan. First confirm whether you need Academic or General Training, record the required overall and section bands, and take official sample material to identify the largest gap.

Choose the next resource by job. Use a sample task to learn instructions, a skills resource to repair a weakness, and a full practice test to check timing and stamina. Repeating full tests without reviewing errors consumes good material without changing the cause of the score.

IELTS.org provides free Academic and General Training sample questions. The collection includes paper tasks, computer practice, answer sheets, audio or transcripts where relevant, sample Writing responses and Speaking sample tasks.

These downloads are the safest answer to searches for an IELTS preparation PDF. They show official instructions and task types. Use the correct module: Listening and Speaking are shared, but Academic and General Training Reading and Writing are different.

The British Council provides free online practice for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Its computer familiarisation material is useful when the screen, navigation or typing workflow is new to you.

IELTS Ready groups mock tests, guided modules, webinars and other preparation material in one account. The free offer and the Premium package are not the same: the British Council states that Premium is unlocked when you book an eligible IELTS test with it. Check the access terms shown in your country and account.

Cambridge publishes official IELTS preparation books and authentic practice-test collections. The numbered Cambridge IELTS series is designed for full-test practice; editions with answers can include Listening audio, answer keys, sample Writing responses and Speaking video material through the product's stated print or digital package.

A skills guide and a test collection do different jobs. The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS develops skills and strategy across Academic and General Training, while a numbered practice-test book is better reserved for timed checkpoints. Check the edition, module and included access before buying.

Official sample tasks, answer sheets and public band descriptors can be downloaded free from IELTS.org and its test partners. A commercial Cambridge book does not become free because a third-party website labels the file as a PDF.

Avoid copied books, answer keys and audio archives. Besides the copyright problem, unofficial bundles are often incomplete, mismatched or altered. Use the publisher's shop, a legitimate bookseller, a library or the access code supplied with the product.

Use one official format source, one main skills resource and a limited set of full tests. Keep an error log that records the task type, the reason for the error and the next drill. For Writing and Speaking, attach the relevant public band descriptors to your review.

A practical sequence is simple: complete an official diagnostic, spend several weeks on targeted skills, run a timed checkpoint, then return to the error log. Add another book only when the current material no longer covers the task you need.
