There is no single IRCC IELTS band for every regular study permit
IRCC’s current regular study-permit eligibility page focuses on enrolment at a designated learning institution, proof of funds, admissibility and satisfying an officer that you will leave when the permit expires. It does not publish a universal IELTS band that every study-permit applicant must meet.
That does not mean English ability is irrelevant. Your college or university can set its own language requirement for admission, and the documents needed for a specific application can depend on the applicant and visa-office instructions.
Student Direct Stream is closed
A lot of older search results still quote SDS IELTS rules. IRCC states that Student Direct Stream ended on 8 November 2024. Applications submitted under SDS on or after the closure are processed as regular study-permit applications.
Do not copy an old SDS IELTS 6.0 rule into a 2026 study-permit plan. Check the current regular study-permit requirements and the admission rules of the institution you plan to attend.

School admission and the study permit are different decisions
A designated learning institution decides whether you meet its academic and language-admission requirements. IRCC decides the study-permit application under immigration rules.
A school may ask for IELTS Academic, TOEFL, PTE Academic or another proof of English, or it may have pathway and waiver policies. Use the institution’s own admissions page for the exact score and test product.
Think ahead to PGWP requirements
The absence of one universal study-permit IELTS band does not remove later language requirements. Most PGWP applicants applying on or after 1 November 2024 need language proof, with CLB 7 or CLB 5 depending on the study-program category.
