Quick answer

The IB's sample exam papers page provides English B SL and HL specimens, markschemes and Paper 2 audio. Check the level and examination session before using any paper. Take one diagnostic, classify mistakes, practise the weakest skill between official checkpoints, and repeat with a new task. A six-week plan is a structure for an already enrolled student, not a guarantee of a grade.

Where to find legitimate English B samples

Start at the IB's official sample exam papers page. It links an English B specimen-paper and markscheme pack identified with first assessment 2020, plus separate specimen Paper 2 audio for SL and HL. Your teacher or school may also provide authorized course material. Match each paper to its markscheme and, for listening, the correct recording before you attempt it.

A search for 'past papers PDF' can surface unlabelled or unauthorized copies. An old paper may be useful for language practice, but a file without a clear course version, level or answer key is a weak source for predicting the current exam. Avoid redistributing copyrighted papers and recordings; link to the official source instead.

  • Official IB source or school-provided authorized material
  • Correct subject and SL/HL level
  • Relevant syllabus and session
  • Matching markscheme and audio
  • A date for a fresh reattempt

Use the first paper to make decisions

Attempt a small official sample under realistic conditions without checking answers. Separate the results into writing, reading and listening. For Paper 1, review whether you addressed the audience, purpose and form. For Paper 2, identify the exact evidence supporting each missed answer. Add an oral recording with a new stimulus or HL extract, reviewed by a teacher or partner.

Choose one main weakness and one secondary weakness. If reading is strong but oral responses are short and hesitant, another reading paper is not your highest-value next session. If writing lacks task coverage, more advanced vocabulary will not fix an omitted request. The Paper 2 error-log method gives a concrete review template.

A six-week plan you can adjust

Weeks 1 and 2: check your syllabus, diagnose each skill and build a short daily habit. Weeks 3 and 4: alternate writing tasks, reading/listening review and oral practice; use new material to test whether corrections transfer. Weeks 5 and 6: add timed official checkpoints, reduce recurring errors and rehearse the assessment conditions with your teacher.

This schedule assumes you already have a course foundation. If basic comprehension is still difficult, extend the language-building phase. If the examination is much further away, space the checkpoints so you do not exhaust a small pool of official specimens too early. Protect time for school assignments and your other DP subjects.

Illustrative six-week sequence; adapt to your school calendar
WeeksMain workEvidence to collect
1–2Diagnostic and foundationOne error log per skill
3–4Targeted practice and feedbackRevised writing and oral recording
5–6Timed checks and focused reviewFresh-task comparison with the baseline

Make each week include all four skills

A workable week might include two short reading sessions, two listening sessions, one Paper 1 draft and revision, and one oral recording with follow-up questions. Keep a small vocabulary list drawn from mistakes in those tasks rather than a large generic list you never use. The five prescribed themes help you vary contexts while you repeat the same skills.

The pattern matters more than exact days. If you have thirty minutes, do a focused task and review instead of completing a paper without analysis. If you have a teacher meeting, bring one marked response and three specific questions. That makes feedback actionable.

Avoid the 2029 syllabus trap

The IB lists a Language B update for first teaching in 2027 and first assessment in May 2029. This article is anchored to the course information available in September 2026. Do not use the 2020 specimen pack as proof that every task and criterion in the new course is identical.

For a 2029 or later exam, compare the new official subject brief with your coordinator's instructions before choosing practice papers or a revision timetable. Keep a note of the document date. When two websites disagree, follow the official source for your cohort.

Use Nektar between official checkpoints

Use the app's available General English tools for a manageable reading and vocabulary routine. Return to authorized IB material and teacher feedback for exam-specific writing, listening and oral evaluation.

Nektar currently shows only a disabled English B preview for eligible students. IB-specific lessons, question sets and assessments are not available in the app. Its available General English tools can support underlying language practice; use your school and official IB material for exam-specific work.

Frequently asked questions

Does the IB provide free English B sample papers?

Yes. The official sample exam papers page links English B specimens and markschemes, plus SL and HL specimen Paper 2 audio.

Can I use any English B past paper for the 2029 exam?

Do not assume older papers match the updated course. The new Language B course has first assessment in May 2029; check its official subject brief and your coordinator's guidance.

Is six weeks enough for a top English B grade?

There is no universal guarantee. The plan is a review framework; the time needed depends on your starting point, level, school course and feedback.

This independent guide cites official IB sources. Nektar is not affiliated with or endorsed by the International Baccalaureate Organization. Check your examination session with your school; IB-specific app sets are not available yet.
