Quick answer

English B is a Language B course for learners with prior experience in English. Both levels study five themes and have writing, listening, reading and an individual oral. HL expects a wider and more complex command of the language, includes two literary works, and uses a literary extract for the oral; SL uses a visual stimulus. Check your exam session with your coordinator because a revised Language B course has its first assessment in 2029.

First check that you mean English B

Students often search for 'IB English' and land on advice for English A: Language and Literature. English B belongs to language acquisition. It is intended for students who have already learned some English and want to develop communication across different contexts. English A has different literary and analytical assessment tasks. Do not copy an English A Paper 1 or Individual Oral plan into English B.

Your school determines which language courses it offers and helps place you at an appropriate level. Ask for the exact subject name, level and examination session before buying a guide or downloading a past paper. That short check prevents weeks of preparation for the wrong assessment.

  • Confirm: English B, not English A or English ab initio
  • Confirm: Standard Level (SL) or Higher Level (HL)
  • Confirm: examination session and the course guide your school follows

What changes between SL and HL?

The IB recommends 150 teaching hours for SL and 240 for HL. Both levels develop receptive skills (listening and reading), productive skills (writing and speaking) and interaction. HL expects greater range and complexity. HL students also study two literary works originally written in the target language; that difference matters especially for the oral assessment.

Do not reduce the decision to 'HL is the same test with longer answers'. Think about your comfort with sustained reading, spontaneous discussion and your total Diploma Programme workload. If you can understand texts but struggle to explain an opinion aloud, build speaking practice into the decision rather than judging only by a multiple-choice exercise.

The assessment map: Paper 1, Paper 2 and the oral

Paper 1 is writing: you respond to a task for an audience and purpose using an appropriate text type. Paper 2 has separate listening and reading sections. The individual oral is an internally assessed conversation with a presentation and follow-up discussion. At SL the starting point is a visual stimulus linked to a course theme; at HL it is an extract from a literary work studied during the course.

The five themes are identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization and sharing the planet. They provide contexts for language, not five isolated lists to memorize. A single article on technology, for example, can involve human ingenuity and social organization at once. Practise explaining the connection rather than forcing every text into one label.

See the Paper 1 writing guide and the Paper 2 reading and listening guide for different practice routines.

A practical way to decide your level

Try one official specimen task at your proposed level and review it with your teacher. In writing, ask whether you can shape a response for the named audience without spending all your effort on basic grammar. In reading and listening, record which questions you miss and why. For speaking, discuss a visual or short text for several minutes, then answer unprepared follow-up questions.

One practice session cannot predict a final grade. Its value is diagnostic: it shows whether your next weeks should focus on comprehension, vocabulary in context, writing control or speaking fluency. Your school can also explain how the level fits your Diploma Programme subject choices.

Which syllabus applies if your exam is in 2029 or later?

The IB lists an updated Language B course with first teaching in 2027 and first assessment in May 2029. This guide describes the assessment outline published for the current course in September 2026. It should not be treated as a promise that every task detail will remain identical for a later session.

If you are in the 2029 cohort or later, use the new subject brief and your coordinator's course guide when planning exact paper tasks and assessment criteria. The broader habits in this article—reading for meaning, writing for audience and speaking from evidence—remain useful even when a syllabus changes.

Where an app can help now

A repeatable language routine helps you arrive at class ready to use English. In Nektar, use the currently available General English learning tools to practise reading, vocabulary and expression at your actual level. Bring IB-specific writing and oral work back to your teacher and the official course material.

Nektar currently shows only a disabled English B preview for eligible students. IB-specific lessons, question sets and assessments are not available in the app. Its available General English tools can support underlying language practice; use your school and official IB material for exam-specific work.

No. English B is a language-acquisition course for learners with prior English experience; English A is a different subject with different assessments.

Do SL students study the two literary works required at HL?

The two originally English literary works are an HL course requirement in the current Language B outline. Your teacher may still assign other reading at SL.

Is the 2029 English B assessment already the same as the current one?

Do not assume that. The updated Language B course starts teaching in 2027 and has its first assessment in May 2029. Check the new subject brief for your session.
